Biography
MARIE CHRISTINE DECHEZLEPRÊTRE
Woman of Vision
Marie Christine Dechezleprêtre is a French, contemporary surrealist painter who creates genuine art. Her paintings above all else, reflect the truth of her world. Marie Christine employs traditional trompe l'oeil techniques and juxtaposes subjects in her work that cause her viewers to consider ordinary objects in an extraordinary way.
Marie Christine’s surrealistic style is very much in the tradition of Rene Magritte, the Belgium master, who is best known for his contribution to the movement. Dechezleprêtre is truly a student of Surrealism, a movement in visual art that flourished in Europe between World Wars I and II. The movement grew principally out of the earlier Dada Movement, which before World War I produced works of anti-art that deliberately defied reason; but the emphasis of Surrealism was not on negation but on positive expression. The movement represented a reaction against what its members saw as the destruction shaped by the “rationalism” that his guided European culture and politics in the past and that had culminated in the horrors of War.
As is true with all surrealist paintings, Ms. Dechezleprêtre’s subconscious mind is used with no intention of making the artwork logically comprehensible, often exploring fantastic visual imagery. Dechezleprêtre often draws on the theories and techniques developed by Surrealist masters. She invests her soul into her work and innovates sophisticated compositions where simplicity is paramount. The end result, often a collection of clean, orderly, fanciful ideas exquisitely captured in oil on canvas. She sees her work as a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that the world of dream and fantasy are joined to the everyday rational word in “an Absolute reality, surreality.”
Almost invisible, we find in her art a certain approach that is almost metaphysical in nature; a transfiguration that brings us to a world that is both daily and eternal. Dechezleprêtre’s canvases project a meticulous and skillful order that contains an extraordinary juxtaposition of ordinary objects or unusual context that gives new meaning to familiar things.
Marie Christine’s awards and accolades are to numerous to mention here. But among them, she has received the silver medal of Paris, the silver medal from the Societe des Artist Français and the first prize from the Salon de Paris.
