Biography

RÉMY PRAT

Exciting Abstraction

Rémy Prat was born in 1956 in Brest de Bretagne, France. He worked as a sailor before moving to Quebec and beginning his career in painting. He studied at l’Academie de peinture Sylvia Arayat from 2001 to 2003, after which he was featured in his first solo show in Montreal.

Prat’s abstract art explores the contrast between vibrant and muted colors, smooth canvas-wide washes with concentrated splashes of color bouquets and the calming almost placid feel of his background with the stirring effects of his works’ centers. His bright hues surprisingly comprise one of the most calming element of his work. The cerulean blues, lush greens and fiery oranges flow seamlessly into one another to provide a serene platform for the concentrated splashy mélange of textures and colors that draws the eye to its seemingly chaotic and spontaneous center. This juxtaposition of texture, color and spatial occupancy forces us to question the boundaries they cross when paired in such close proximity and demands that we dispose of our predetermined and regulated ideas of how form and color should flow.

This extreme abstract work has been received with acclaim and won many awards, including first prize at the Festival de peinture à Mascouche in 2004 and at the Salon des arts visuels de Brossard in 2005.
